A couple weeks ago, my wife’s cousin stopped for gas at a station just up the street from his house. He got out, pumped his gas, then walked toward the building to pay. As he crossed the lot, a rather sizable group of young blacks (somewhere between 30-40, according to eyewitnesses and police reports) both men and women hanging out at the station, took note of him and loudly started asking "what Whitey was doing in their neck of the woods", and insulting him. He ignored them, paid and walke...

When the war in Iraq is discussed on JU, many times the debate will devolve into a discussion about the US involvement in the Vietnam War, and then a debate will begin about the pros and cons of that situation. One fellow JUer, in a discussion about protest, pointed out that he wanted to keep the discussion on his thread in the "now", but since I had mentioned Vietnam in my comment, he’d support me on it. It is my feeling that such a comparison between the two wars is not only correct, but...

I have sincerely enjoyed Tex W’s thread (see link) on her recent discovery that she is a sci-fi fan, and is "embracing the inner dork". I welcome her with hailing frequencies open. As I related, on her thread, I have been a fan of the Trek universe for many a year, dating back to the 70s. Jumping off the school bus, running into the house, grabbing a fistful of Oreos and a glass of milk, and settling down for an hour of star-flecked bliss before homework. My friends and I would often congr...

I heard on the news the other day that The National Alliance of Gays and Lesbians Against Defamation has brought a lawsuit against "Today Show" movie critic Gene Shalit. It seems he gave "Brokeback Mountain" a poor review. Tsk-tsk. Now he's in for it. This of course incurred the wrath of the gays and lesbians, who, I'm quite sure, are more than ecstatic that they've finally shattered the glass ceiling of the multiplex with the story of two gay sheepherders. Baaaaaa--aaad news for Gene. A...

I was listening to a talk radio show (conservative, natch) the other morning at work, and the co-host told of a story she'd received from a Marine in Iraq. Seems they were using an abandoned amusement park as a food distribution center, and of course the rides didn't work. One of the men got the idea to give the kids who were there rides on the Ferris Wheel, though, and all the men who weren't currently doing much pitched in to take turns helping hand-turn the Wheel. This went on for hours....

The debate over the US government spying on its citizens has so many people here on JU, and on other sites I've visited, in such a tizzy. Is Bush responsible? Isn’t he? Our individual rights being assailed! Aren’t they? Privacy is paramount! Isn’t it? Part of what follows is from a post I left over on stevendaedalus’s thread. Please see the link. So many in America today are all too quick to forget that so much that is so hotly debated and readily decried in our present war on terror h...

U.S. Toll for Year in Iraq Nears '04 Mark By JASON STRAZIUSO, Associated Press Writer 36 minutes ago BAGHDAD, Iraq - Bombings and shootings killed at least 20 people across Iraq on the final day of the year Saturday, while U.S. troops shivered in the cold during a performance by an "American Idol" singer as part of New Year's Eve celebrations. The U.S. military also reported the death of an American soldier from wounds, bringing its death toll in Iraq for 2005 near last year's re...

I know we’re several days past the Christmas gift-giving season, but I just have a question for everyone, and be truthful: What is the worst, stupidest gift you’ve ever given your boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse? Dig deep now, and really be honest, no matter how embarrassing or goofy. The reason I’m asking is this: we were out to dinner with some friends the other night, and the subject turned to what we got for Christmas. One thing led to another, and the wife dredged up (again) a pres...

I recently posted an article detailing the efforts of an area strip bar to drum up a little Christmas Spirit and, apparently, Goodwill to Men. They would graciously be waiving the cover charge for anyone who came to the show and brought a toy with them. The toy was then, in turn, to be donated to Toys for Tots. The name given by the bar management to the promotion? "Toys for Tatas". How festive, no? Anyway, this article elicited precious little traffic; I went back and forth with a couple o...

A week or so ago, ParaTed was asking for input on his Christmas CD idea. One of the songs I suggested was a tune by Garth Brooks, from his CD "Sevens". The song is called "Belleau Wood", and is loosely based on an actual incident that occurred in WW I. It’s not so much a "Christmas song" as it is a song "about" Christmas, and the power it has over those of us who believe in its Message. Why it wasn’t included as at least filler on his Christmas CD, I’ll never know. Last year at this time, I ...

Did anyone see Newt Gingrich on Hannity and Colmes a few nights ago? On a discussion about the liberal Left's Peace-at-any-Price position on the War on Terror, he said the following: "The liberalism of Franklin Roosevelt allowed him to stand against the three threats of Nazism, Fascism and Imperial Japan. The liberalism of Truman allowed him to stand against the Russians in West Berlin (with the Airlift) in 1948 and the North Koreans and Chinese in the Korean War. The liberalism of Kennedy ...
