"Belleau Wood"
Published on December 20, 2005 By Rightwinger In Misc
A week or so ago, ParaTed was asking for input on his Christmas CD idea. One of the songs I suggested was a tune by Garth Brooks, from his CD "Sevens". The song is called "Belleau Wood", and is loosely based on an actual incident that occurred in WW I.
It’s not so much a "Christmas song" as it is a song "about" Christmas, and the power it has over those of us who believe in its Message. Why it wasn’t included as at least filler on his Christmas CD, I’ll never know.
Last year at this time, I posted the lyrics to one of my all-time favorite Christmas tunes, "Snoopy’s Christmas", which takes place, ironically enough, during the First World War.

Here is my selection for this year:

"Belleau Wood"

By Garth Brooks

"Oh, the snowflakes fell in silence;
Over Belleau Wood that night.
For a Christmas truce had been declared;
By both sides in the fight.

As we lay there in our trenches,
The silence broke in two,
By German soldier singin’
A song that we all knew…..

Though I did not know the language,
The song was "Silent Night".
I heard my buddy whisper,
‘All is calm, all is bright.’

And then the fear and doubt
Surrounded me; ‘cause I’d die if I was wrong!
But I stood up in my trench,
An’ I began to sing along.

An’ then, across the frozen battlefield,
Another’s voice joined in
‘til one-by-one each man became
A singer of the hymn.

An’ then I thought that I was dreaming,
For right there in my sight,
Stood the German soldier,
‘neath the falling flakes of white.

An’ then he raised his hand, and smiled at me,
As if he seemed to say
‘Here’s hoping we both live to see us
Find a better way.’

An’ then, the Devil’s clock struck midnight and
The skies lit up again!
And the battlefield where Heaven stood,
Was blown to Hell again.

But, for just fleeting moment,
The answer seemed so clear;
Heaven’s not beyond the clouds,
It’s just beyond the fear…..

No, Heaven’s not beyond the clouds,
It’s for us to find…..here."

Merry Christmas, all.

And, to our friends who are stuck with just the Old Testament, Happy Chanuka (I hope I spelled it right).

I will have to check out that song. I love the lyrics. I have heard of such stories form WWII vets. Thanks for sharing.
