A place for me to pour out my rants without clogging the inboxes of my friends and family. Also a place to give info on myself and Mary, our family news and events.

As I've related before, I work with the public. I manage a restaurant in the evenings, but in the mornings, two or three days a week, I work at a dollar store.

I had an Hispanic gentleman come up to my register today. He plunked down his three items. I said "Hi..how you doin'?" Nothing. Not even eye contact. I rang him up, gave him his total, took his money (which he counted quite well for himself, thank you), and handed him his bag. "Have a good one," I said. Again, nothing.....then, he turned to look for the guy he came in with and hollered something in Spanish. I had realized, of course, that he didn't speak English, but this just clinched it for me.

You know......I have no problem whatever with people coming here from other countries (as long as it's legally). After all, that's what America is all about. None of us would be here if our ancestors hadn't come from somewhere else......even the ancestors of the American Indians came from Asia. They came here and opened convenience cave-stores, operated mastodon and Woolly mammoth taxis, lots of things.

Anyway. Come here if you like, but PLEASE................LEARN OUR LANGUAGE!
You're coming here to live....the native language here is English. Learn it, for crying out loud! If you want to speak your native tongue at home, fine; but you're going to have to interact with the locals sooner or later. It would be nice if you could at least converse with some other words than "no comprende".

I see signs all over town in both English and Spanish.....we're told that we have to be "sensitive" to their needs, so we have to learn to be bi-lingual. Bullshit. They're coming here, we're not going there. Why should we be expected to accomodate them?
They want to taste the good life of American living? Let them learn to speak our language, so they can be real Americans.

When our grandparents and great-grandparents came here from other nations, the first thing they wanted to do was learn English, so they could be "good (or real) Americans".
That's the way it should be; we shouldn't have to worry about whether or not Pablo can read a stop sign or a restroom designation.....he should be able to read English for himself. Hell; he shouldn't even be able to take the driver's test anyway, unless he can read it in English (they give them orally in Spanish here to the Mexicans).

All this adaptation to accomodate other languages...where does it end? Will we evetually need enormous billboards or signs, with their ads or messages in English, Spanish, French, Russian, German, Japanese, Chinese, Bulgarian, Czech.....?
Having to print all these new, bi-lingual signs has to cost money. Where does money come from? You and me, Joeuser....our taxes, the prices we pay for our goods......where will it end?

I do hope he doesn't want to become a citizen. Dept of Naturalization requires that they read AND write the enlish language.

This is the only western country that does not encourage its citizens to speak more than one language. It's no wonder the rest of the world dislikes America so much. It's because of the arrogance.

Sorry but that policy has been in place for more years than you and I put together have lived! It's been in place since before WW1. And it seems like quite a few people have come over anyway. Sort of blows your theory out of the water now don't it?

Doc is saying they read and write English not speak it, correct?

Did you know with a population of at least 20 Million Latinos who can speak spanish, the United States has become one of the largest Spanish speaking countries?
What is funny is the 'English Only' movement because like ya know what like ya know version of English like ya know they have in might have in mind to be spoken, like ya know what I am talking about?

OOPs, my bad. Add speak it to the end of the sentence. Direct from the US Dept of naturalization website.

Welcome to the naturalization home page. Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon a foreign citizen or national after he or she fulfills the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The general requirements for administrative naturalization include:

a period of continuous residence and physical presence in the United States;
residence in a particular USCIS District prior to filing;
an ability to read, write, and speak English;
a knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government;
good moral character;
attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution; and,
favorable disposition toward the United States.

Until they need us for something, that is.

It's because of the arrogance.

And whatever reason could we have for being arrogant?
We've saved the world from tyranny twice in a hundred years (three times if you count the Cold War).....we send aid and support to (much older) nations all over the globe who can't keep their own asses afloat without foreign assistance. Why on earth should we be arrogant?

Don't get me wrong, I don't begrudge it to them at all, if they need it and we have it.
What I hate is the hypocrisy; we see people rioting in the streets, burning the US flag, hanging our presidents in effigy and yelling "Death to America!"......but then let that same country get hit by an earthquake, flood or other natural disaster the next day, and they'll gladly take our relief supplies and money.
The Great Satan....yep, that's us.
Mom always told me you can't buy friends. Guess the government needs to learn that, too. So do you, RATME4

Yeah, that pisses me off, too.

Instead of assimilating themselves into our culture, they have demanded that WE accomodate theirs.

Precisely! I've been saying that for years.

Personally, if I were to move to another country where English wasn't the native language, I would feel it an imposition if I forced them to speak my language. The first thing I'd do is learn theirs;, but then, I'm polite like that.

That's why I think we should be like France. They aren't arrogant, even though they "preserve" the French language of all "impurities."

I wouldn't mind Spanish speakers so much if they didn't demand that others accomodate them while they need not accomodate anybody else.

on Oct 29, 2004
I don't know about the rest of y'all but the people I know that speak fluent Spanish also speak English, some may not have the grasp of the English language like that of one who has spoken English from womb to tomb, though they do learn it if they want to interact with other people who cannot speak Spanish. It is called common sense, if I move to Japan it would make sense to learn Japanese while I am there because not everybody in Japan speaks English, in fact, most people only speak one language in Japan. Can you guess what language that is?

Countries with two languages, which ones? Britain, Australia, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Spain, France, Chile, Russia, Germany, etc.?

Not everybody speaks two languages but everybody does speak one language and what language it is depends on what country you are in.

RATM quit trying to turn this into a Reverse Racism Language issue.

I also wonder what's the big deal about speaking two languages. I've taken some classes, and I know a little bit of French and a little bit of Germany. Want to know how either of them benefitted me? I don't know the answer, but surely one of you do! (Of course, I'd like to learn Japanese and Korean, but only because there's tons of cool stuff on the Intarweb that's only in Japanese or Korean)

HAHA. All I'm saying is that this is the only country I know of a lot of people get mad if you speak another language. I think we should teach kids to speak multiple languages, but come people are threatened by Spanish.

I guess people in other countries wouldn't be annoyed if tons of immigrants started speaking some obscure tongue and demanded that the countries accomodate them on it.

Hell, most people cannot speak English properly and you want them to learn another language, that is so like ya know funny, ya know what I mean.
