A place for me to pour out my rants without clogging the inboxes of my friends and family. Also a place to give info on myself and Mary, our family news and events.
I and my wife were forced to sit through a lecture, or rather a sermon, by my wife's aunt this weekend.
Her aunt is a very devout Christian, one of those who refers to herself and those in her church as Christians, while every other Christian-based denomination is whatever they call themselves, if you get my drift.
We were visiting, and were discussing the Halloween/birthday party my wife threw for her mom, who turns 50 on Halloween (the party was held on the 23rd).
We were informed that, even though our hearts were in the right place, we were glorifying satan by celebrating the pagan holiday called Halloween. I very much like her aunt overall, and she is a very nice lady when you're not discussing religion. Also, I was raised to respect my elders, so I kept my mouth shut and nodded in the right places.
If I am to understand completely, any acknowledgment of Halloween is considered, by many, to be satan worship. So, by extension, when little Sally dresses up like a princess and little Jimmy dresses up like a cowboy, and they go out into the neighborhood knocking on doors and getting candy, they're not just trick-or-treating, they're worshipping the Prince of Darkness (and I'm not referring to Ozzy Osbourne here).

What a load of crap.

I've been doing some thinking about this, and it irks me that some zealots insist on finding evil and darkness where none is intended.

When I dress up like Homer Simpson (last year...I won first prize..woohoo! It was a pumpkin snack dish. D'oh!) and go out to a Halloween party, or pass out candy to the kids at my door, am I intending to worship satan? Of course not. Now, on the other hand, when I walk into a church, I AM intending to worship God. If I'm not intending to worship satan, how can I be worshipping him? What good would be "unintentional" worship, anyhow? i always was under the impression that worship comes, intially, from the heart.

I do understand that some nutjobs take Halloween too much to heart and dress up in black robes, dance around a bonfire and sacrifice cats to appease satan (hm...satan's a cat person...I always knew there was something I didn't like about cats....hm.....), but I can't stop them from doing that. Their craziness is their own.
The majority of us, though, decorate our houses with cobwebs, ghosts, witches (another thing her aunt doesn't like....she hates Harry Potter, too. It irks HER that we own all the books and movies) and skeletons and give candy to kids.
The only evil I've ever taken part in during Halloween was when I was a teenager, and we egged and TP'd old man Markey's house. Now, if there ever was an evil being, it was old man Markey! Grumpy bastard. One of those "You hit it in my yard! It's mine now! You damn kids!" types.

I don't need a history of All Hallows Eve....I've done a little research, and I know about Samhain, the Roman celebration of the harvest, the Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations, and everything that has combined to create what we've come to call Halloween. I just want some opinions from all you joeusers out there....you know my opinion; Halloween is a harmless good time, but what do you think? Is Halloween just good, clean fun, or is it a celebration of evil?

Awesome article. I love Halloween and I am dismayed that so many groups and so many towns are trying to do away with it. I actually have more to say about this, but I've got a bad earache that I need to tend to. I'll catch up with this thread again later.

I personally don't celebrate Halloween, and not just because of the reasons that you mentioned, but I don't care if others do it. It's your choice if you allow your kids to participate in that stuff. It's just like people allowing their kids to believe in the Easter Bunny, or Santa Clause; most of it has a Pagan/"dark" history, but it's not usually treated and respected in that manner now.

Thanks, TXW....coming from you, that means a lot.

Good for you. I appreciate that.
The Easter Bunny, I have no clue where that came from, but Santa is, of course the mythologizing of St. Nicholas, a priest from France who gave toys to poor children.

You aunt would probably be horrified to learn that she worships on the Sun's Day, and that other days of the week and months of the year are homage to pagan and ancient gods. January for Janus, Thursday for Thor... you get the point. Halloween, for most people, is just harmless fun and a chance to wear whatever you want and not get made fun of. I'm looking forward to wearing my fake eyelashes once more.

Actually I think that the whole holiday of Easter is pagan.

Easter Bunny-- pagan rituals of fertility, celebrated in the spring... that leads to colored eggs too... but I'm clueless on Jelly Beans

Or based on pagan beliefs. Not pagan in it's meaning...

I was watching a TV show about Halloween with some nun on it last night, and she proudly proclaimed "we Christians have a long history of taking pagan holidays and making them our own!".

Yeah, they do.  They also have a long history of not understanding the true meaning of the holidays they manipulate, and of freaking out over the smallest thing and claiming it 'satan's work".

Anyhoo....I think that Halloween is fun and candy.  I think that it's only evil incarnate in the minds of misguided christians.

not just Christians, any body that is misguided can get that idea...

You know, the thing is, hardcore Christians can (and do!) make the argument that Christmas, birthdays, etc. should not be celebrated based on scripture that admonishes us not to put one day up above another.

I personally think it's silly for people to get so riled up over something that for the general public is just a mild-mannered seasonal celebration. Halloween is a great opportunity for children to use their imaginations and pretend to be someone or something else . . . and in addition to pretending, they actually get to wear a neat costume to go along with their fantasy. It brings neighborhoods together with the decorating and handing out candy and parties. It's an opportunity for us to be scary and delight in being scared in a safe, harmless way. It's a family tradition that children (and adults) can look forward to all year long.

It's not about worship, but rather just a bit of silly escape. If Christian children can play like they are robots or ghosts or bunny rabbits any other day, why do some have a problem with them doing the same thing on Halloween?

When we talk about the whole PC thing, the complaints about Halloween seem to me to be an example of PC gone wild (not to be confused with Girls Gone Wild . . . there's a referral for ya, RW).

When I dress up like Homer Simpson (last year...I won first prize..woohoo! It was a pumpkin snack dish. D'oh!)

Got cool points from me for that one!

Thanks, TXW....coming from you, that means a lot

I appreciate that. Thank you.

Thanks for all the input. I think it's such a shame when people try to ruin the fun of others just because they don't think they should be doing whatever they're doing.
If some people want to be idiots and go out in the middle of BFE on a cold night and worship satan, then that's on them; I'll stay warm at home and pass out candy or go to a party at someone's house. The hell with satan (so to speak).

As with many things in life, Halloween is all in what you make of it.
